This statement comes from Grant Smith, the Deputy Director of National Affairs at the Drug Policy Alliance and is available at drugpolicy.org.  Smith issued the statement in response to President Trump requesting China take a harsher stance on fentanyl.  The President went as far as to say the country should consider the death penalty for people selling or distributing the drug. The Deputy Director was critical in his response saying:

“Draconian criminal punishments for fentanyl will actually make the problems associated with this drug much worse than they are now. This won’t reduce addiction and overdose deaths in the U.S., but it will incentivize the proliferation of even more potent drugs that will further exacerbate the crisis.”
